The big Skyblivion mod—a fan project to remake The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion using Skyrim’s engine—has been in the works since 2012. Recently, Bethesda surprised everyone by dropping an official Oblivion remaster, which made some fans worry that Skyblivion might get shut down or ignored. But Bethesda isn’t just okay with it—they’re actually cheering the mod on!

In a new video, Bethesda’s art and development lead, Dan Lee (who worked on OblivionSkyrim, and the new remaster), gave Skyblivion a shoutout, calling it “very special” and saying he’s excited to see the team’s take on the game.

The Skyblivion team was thrilled, responding on social media: “We can’t wait to get it into your hands this year! We appreciate your support; Oblivion fans are having a fantastic year”.

And Bethesda didn’t stop there—they sent the mod team free copies of their official Oblivion remaster as a gesture of goodwill. It’s refreshing to see a big company like Bethesda (owned by Xbox) back fan projects instead of sending lawyers after them. Cough Nintendo and Take-Two, take notes.

So, Skyblivion is still coming later this year, and Bethesda is all for it. Fans of Oblivion, rejoice! There are now two fantastic ways to get back to Cyrodiil!
